DL Walter Mathis breaks down his commitment to the LSU Tigers

Why LSU?

Walter Mathis, a four-star defensive lineman from Zachary, Louisiana, committed to LSU on July 28, 2023. Mathis is the No. 113 overall recruit in the 2024 class and the No. 11 defensive lineman in the country. He chose LSU over Alabama, Georgia, and Texas.

Mathis said that his relationship with LSU defensive line coach Jamar Cain was a big factor in his decision. Cain is a former LSU player who has coached several NFL players, including Rashard Lawrence and Ed Oliver.

“Coach Cain is a great coach,” Mathis said. “He knows how to develop players, and he’s produced a lot of great players in the NFL. I think he can help me reach my full potential.”

Mathis's commitment is a big win for LSU

Mathis is one of the top defensive line prospects in the country, and his commitment is a big win for LSU. The Tigers have been looking for a player of Mathis’s caliber to help them improve their defense, which ranked 11th in the SEC in 2022.

Mathis’s commitment is also a sign that LSU is on the right track under new head coach Brian Kelly. Kelly, who won a national championship at Notre Dame in 2018, is trying to rebuild LSU into a national contender.

“Walter Mathis is a great player, and we’re excited to have him,” Kelly said. “He’s a big, strong, athletic defensive lineman who can make a lot of plays. We think he can be a difference-maker for us.”

Mathis is excited about the future at LSU

Mathis is excited about the future at LSU. He believes that the Tigers have the potential to be a national championship contender, and he wants to be a part of that.

“I think we can win a national championship at LSU,” Mathis said. “We have the players, the coaches, and the tradition. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
