Cleveland Guardians Announce Final Roster Ahead of Season Opener

Pitching Staff Finalized

The Cleveland Guardians have finalized their pitching staff for the upcoming season, with several key additions and departures shaping the roster. Shane Bieber will lead the rotation as the ace, followed by Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, and Zach Plesac. Rookie Konnor Pilkington and veteran Aaron Civale will serve as swingmen, providing depth and versatility.

The bullpen has also undergone significant changes, with Emmanuel Clase returning as the closer. Sam Hentges, Nick Sandlin, Eli Morgan, and Tanner Bibee will provide setup and long relief options. The Guardians have also added veteran right-hander Nick Wittgren, who brings playoff experience to the team.

Infield Positions Set

The Guardians' infield will feature a mix of experience and youth. All-Star shortstop Amed Rosario will anchor the middle infield, with Andrés Giménez moving to second base. José Ramírez will continue to man third base, while Josh Naylor and Owen Miller will compete for playing time at first base.

The Guardians have also added veteran infielder Mike Freeman to provide depth and leadership. Freeman has played over 1,000 games in the majors and can play multiple positions.

Outfield Boasts Power and Speed

The Guardians' outfield will be led by All-Star center fielder Myles Straw, who provides excellent defense and speed at the top of the lineup. Rookie Steven Kwan will start in left field, bringing his on-base skills and contact hitting to the table.

Right field will be a competition between Oscar Mercado and Will Benson. Mercado is a former Gold Glove winner, while Benson has shown flashes of power and athleticism. The Guardians also have veteran outfielder Tyler Naquin as a depth option.

Catcher Position Solidified

Austin Hedges will remain the primary catcher for the Guardians, providing strong defense and leadership behind the plate. Luke Maile will serve as the backup catcher, bringing experience and a solid bat to the team.

The Guardians believe they have assembled a balanced and competitive roster that can contend for a playoff spot in 2023. The team will open the season on March 30th against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
