The European Space Agency

A European Gateway to Space

Introduction

The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization founded in 1975 with the mission to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to citizens. ESA is Europe's gateway to space.

History

The European Space Agency was formed by merging the European Launcher Development Organization (ELDO) and the European Space Research Organization (ESRO). ELDO was responsible for developing the Europa launch vehicle, while ESRO was responsible for space science research. The merger of these two organizations created a single, unified organization responsible for all aspects of European space exploration.

ESA has since become one of the world's leading space agencies, with a wide range of programs and activities. These include:

  • Space exploration
  • Human spaceflight
  • Launchers
  • Telecommunications
  • Navigation
  • Monitoring
  • Space science

Accomplishments

ESA has a long history of accomplishments in space exploration. Some of its most notable achievements include:

  • The development of the Ariane launch vehicle, which is one of the most successful launch vehicles in the world.
  • The launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, which has revolutionized our understanding of the universe.
  • The deployment of the Rosetta spacecraft, which landed a probe on a comet for the first time in history.
  • The launch of the ExoMars rover, which is currently searching for signs of life on Mars.

Gateway to Space

ESA is Europe's gateway to space. It provides the infrastructure, the expertise, and the inspiration to enable Europe to play a leading role in space exploration. ESA is committed to shaping the future of space exploration and to ensuring that Europe continues to reap the benefits of space.
